Great Questions To Ask During An Interview

Great Questions To Ask During An Interview – Dear Matt: Do you have any interview tips? I always read from recent college graduates how important it is to ask the right interview questions in a job interview, but I don’t know what interview questions to ask. Could you provide a list of these interview questions and what employers want to ask recent college graduates and new job seekers?

Matt: I will say this, I like to have a list of interview questions when I’m preparing for an entry level job. Because it definitely not only helped me ask the right interview questions, but also helped me prepare for the interview and build my confidence.

Good news! Below is a great, extensive list of the best job interview questions to ask employers. It includes great advice from corporate America recruiters and career management leaders from two of the nation’s top business schools.

Of The Best Questions To Ask In An Interview

The reality is that if you are confident and prepared for the interview, you can relax, be yourself and shine.

However, many job seekers, especially recent college graduates, are shy or timid when it comes to their first job interview. I was one of them, and looking back on those early interviews, I asked the wrong questions because I wasn’t prepared for the right questions. It makes a big difference to how employers see you and how successful you are and how well you fit into a team.

“Not asking questions shows a lack of interest and a missed opportunity to sell yourself,” says Susie Clark, director of campus career services at Indiana’s Kelly School of Business. “It’s important to remember that conversation is a two-way street and they expect to ask questions, so show them you’re open and interested in their situation.”

Corinne M. Snell, Ed.D., associate dean for student professional development at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, agrees. Prior to his current role, Snell worked in America at colleges for Campbell’s Soup Company, Siemens Health Services and Lutron Electronics.

The Questions To Ask In An Informational Interview

“A certain level of spontaneity is expected in any job interview, but candidates should prepare a list of questions in advance,” says Snell. “The worst thing you can do is pretend you don’t have any questions or say, ‘Um, I think we covered that.’

The most important thing for a college student or recent graduate to remember is that as much as they’re being interviewed by a recruiter or hiring manager, they’re also interviewing a potential employer, says Justin Bischoff, talent acquisition consultant for Buffalo Wild Wings. Casual restaurant and sports bar franchise.

“Ask questions about things that interest you,” says Bischoff. “These should be things that you think will be with the employer for the long term.”

Try to keep the conversation going, says Bischoff. For example, if you’re interested in sales, “You mentioned earlier in our interview that one of the main goals of this role is to increase sales at the restaurant, could you tell us a little more about that?”

“I’m also impressed by a candidate who does research about the company and the position before the interview,” says Bischoff. “Asking questions about what you’ve learned and what’s really important to you can show how much time and effort you put into joining the organization’s team.

Snell put it bluntly: “Employees need to be prepared for that moment when the employer turns the tables and says, ‘What questions do you have for me?’

That’s what appeals to today’s corporate recruiters, says Asma Anees, talent manager at Blue Cross, a Minnesota health care provider. She manages college relations at Blue Cross and is one of the first people to interview recent college graduates and entry-level employees who interview/call the company.

According to Anees, position/job seekers who inquire about work-related challenges stand out. Employers love candidates who are up for a challenge and want to know what it takes to succeed in the role. “It helps to understand that they are willing to take on certain responsibilities,” Anees said.

Job Interview Questions: Six Questions You Must Ask The Interviewer During A Job Interview

Anise likes when job seekers ask job interview questions like, “What are the performance expectations or how will you be evaluated?”

“These students have been graded for everything they’ve done this past year,” Anees said. “These millennials want to know where they stand, and I can appreciate that. It suggests that they want to do well and be rewarded for it.

Training Good question: Will there be training or mentoring for this role? Anees says job seekers who want to pursue professional development opportunities stand out to her.

The “big questions” are corporate job seekers interested in business, strategic planning and company change and growth, Anees said. “That tells me they care about the well-being of the organization and their future.”

“It’s very unlikely that there will be enough time to ask many questions, so the candidate should be prepared and have some questions,” says Snell. “Interviews are a two-way street, and employers expect job seekers to be prepared to ask thoughtful, intelligent questions.

But remember this – thoughtfulness and insight aren’t dependent on how much time off, salary, or benefits you get. This information will be discussed over time.

1. Tell us about yourself and your career? Yes – this is what job seekers should ask interviewers. In this way, you can learn more about the employer, what you like about the company, and a common interest can be created, which further strengthens the relationship. “It’s all about building relationships, and it’s important to show genuine interest,” Clark said.

2. Why did you stay with this company or why did you join the company recently? Their answers usually tell a lot about the company’s work environment/culture. “For many college students and recent college graduates, corporate culture is an important deciding factor,” Clark said.

3. What skills or qualities have led to your success? This is an opportunity to highlight your strengths in one of these skills if you haven’t already.

4. I learned a lot today and I’m even more excited about this opportunity, so can I answer any questions about whether I can do this job? “It shows that you want the job and want to remove any concerns they may have,” Clark said.

As the interview draws to a close, and if the employer hasn’t already covered it, Clark says to always ask: What are the next steps in the interview process?

“It’s important to know what to expect and when to follow up if you don’t get a response,” Clark said.

User Interview: How To Ask Good Questions

“When a candidate asks thoughtful questions, it shows that they have strong communication skills, are genuinely interested in the opportunity, and want to make a long-term investment,” says Bischoff. Ultimately, asking the right questions will make the interview and the candidate memorable when it comes time to make a hiring decision.

Dara Warne, Chief Results Officer at Penn Foster Education Group, impresses employers by asking questions about how a company hires new hires:

Why this question: By asking this question, the candidate shows an interest in the company culture and sets them up for success from the start by engaging with the employees and their career path. “The first few months of a new job are a critical time in developing the employee-employer relationship, so the candidate wants to know that the company is a place where they can grow and mature,” says Warne. “Working with employer partners, we have created mentoring programs that help new employees develop and strengthen work and interpersonal skills.

Another good question, says Warne, is “How does your company encourage collaboration/teamwork, integrity and initiative among its employees?”

Good Questions To Ask In An Interview

Why this question: This question shows the candidate that they already have certain “soft skills” that are typically acquired and developed through working in the workforce. This student may have graduated from an institution that offers soft skills (or “power skills”) as a special program and is well on his way to developing these important work and personal life skills.

Good questions show that you’ve researched the position, the company, and even highlighted some of your strengths. “It shows the employer that you’re very interested and excited about the opportunity,” says Clark.

“I appreciate candidates taking the last few minutes to reiterate their interest and why their skills and abilities will make a difference to the team,” Anies said. “Don’t forget to smile and shake hands firmly.”
