You may be tempted to spend a lot of time and effort decorating the rooms that your guests will see, but neglecting your bedroom is a bad idea. After all, you spend almost a third of your life in your bedroom, so it is important that it is comfortable, cozy and welcoming. An unfinished bedroom can feel chaotic and out of place, but just because you need to customize your space doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on it.

Whether you already have a must-have bedroom and need a little extra flair to complete the look, or you’re starting from scratch, we spoke to a seasoned stylist to get some tips on inexpensive ways to decorate your bedroom.

Stephanie Beverly is the principal interior designer and principal artist at Twelve15 Design Studio, based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

No, we’re not talking about Amazon (although we do love a good Prime). Search the house for things you no longer use and put them back in the bedroom, suggests Beverly.

“Buy your own house,” he said. “A lot of times people have styles and decorations in their homes that can be used in the bedroom. Sometimes a traditional lamp that doesn’t belong in the living room looks right next to your bed.

Dealing with a small bedroom? “Add a mirror to make the room look bigger and more elements visible,” says Beverly. Hanging a mirror behind the bed or above a rug can help bring in extra natural light and fill up the walls without spending a lot of money.

Find used mirrors at thrift stores and flea markets. An old mirror is very easy to upgrade with paint and a little glass cleaner.

Buying fine art can be expensive, and you may not want to spend money on a hand-painted piece for your bedroom. Instead, Beverly suggests making a simple canvas painting or wall print or photo to fill the empty walls. The easiest way to make a bedroom look imperfect is to completely clean those walls.

“Be frugal with your bed, from the mattress to the bedding – it really changes your life,” says Beverley. Even if you’re decorating a bedroom on a budget, try to get a nice mattress or that bedding you’ve been eyeing.

It’s worth spending a few extra dollars to get a good night’s sleep. If you can’t afford a full set but rarely use the top sheet, consider buying just the one that fits.

Beverly suggests upgrading the windows if you want to make your bedroom look better. “Opt for lightweight finishes that provide great functionality or offer leather or ease of cleaning,” he said. “It’s important to pay attention to the lighting in your space and how it affects the look and feel.

Small Bedroom Design Ideas To Make The Space Seem Bigger

It’s no secret that bargain prices are lower. If you’re on a budget, rely on smaller features. Although it can feel awkward if you don’t get it right, sticking to a simple color palette with a few layers can make your bedroom less cluttered.

“Upgrading the lighting in the bedroom can create space,” says Beverly. “I like different levels of light, so consider lights with different levels of brightness or dimmed lights.” Consider a headboard to transform your bedroom.

Your bedroom should have at least two or three sources of light. Calculate exactly how many lumens you need by multiplying 10-20 by the square footage of your room.

Changing your bedroom decor every time it goes out of style can be expensive. Instead, Beverly recommends doing the basics and spending more on those pieces you know will last for years.

How To Make A Small Bedroom Look Bigger: 16 Expert Tips

If you don’t know where to start, sometimes it’s more expensive to buy a lot of things you don’t like. If you are on a tight budget, you can afford a lot of modeling services.

“I think it’s also a good idea to consult with a designer or decorator about ideas for your bedroom,” says Beverly. “This small investment can save you time and money while empowering you and giving you a sense of direction.”

A fun way to keep your bedroom fresh and new is to change your bedding each season, says Beverly. Although it requires a small investment, it is a good way to avoid leaving the space and make it look like you did.
