When your iPhone warns you that it’s low on memory, you usually won’t be able to take any more photos or videos, and you may even stop receiving iMessages and text messages. Other things you may notice: Your iPhone runs slowly, apps crash, and you can’t download attachments, apps, and other content.

On the other hand, you can enjoy cleaning your iPhone regularly, even if you’re running out of space. Let’s look at a few different ways to free up space and keep your iPhone running smoothly.
Before we look at some third-party apps and storage options, let’s estimate how much space you have using Settings in iOS (as always, back up your iPhone before deleting content better to take, check out our guide if you want to help).
Usually takes up the most space, we’ll come back to that later. As for freeing up space directly in Settings, look for third-party apps that you can uninstall and review.

There are many options to save photos and videos before deleting them. You can use iCloud Photo Sharing (although videos may take a while to download), upload them to your Photo Library on your Mac (if you’re not already using iCloud Photo Library ), or may use third party software/hardware.
An external drive can be a good choice if you want to store a large number of videos, photos or files at once or if you don’t want to use a cloud service. USB power is also very convenient when you’re traveling or don’t have a computer with you. For years, there weren’t really any external flash drives that plugged directly into iPhones and iPads, but now there are some great options.
SanDisk’s iXpand flash drive is my favorite with both Lightning and standard USB connections. These external flash drives are available in 32, 64, and 128 GB capacities and work with the free iXpand Drive app. The 32GB variant is priced at $35. There are some cheaper options, but since you need to use the manufacturer’s software to use this type of Lightning drive, it’s important to go with a reputable brand that provides good software.
Many times third party software/hardware can be really helpful in helping with iPhone storage issues. One of the best free options is Google Photos, which offers free unlimited storage and a clean user interface to help you free up space. Note that you need an Internet connection to download the content and then free up space on your iPhone. You can also use Dropbox to automatically save the photos you take, but only 2GB of space is provided for free.

You’ll notice that in the memory settings we covered a little earlier, you may see an option to clear the cache for some apps, but not for others. There are some third-party apps in the App Store that appear to help clear the cache of several apps and iOS, such as Dr. Cleaner This app also helps you delete photos by finding similar ones, so you only keep the photos you need. Dr. Cleaner is free to download from the App Store, has 5/5 stars and is even ad-free.
Another third-party program that helps you free up memory by scanning photos and videos and even a mobile network monitor is PowerClean. It’s also a free app with 5/5 stars, but it has ads.
If you notice in your settings that your messages are taking up a lot of space, there are some good ways to quickly reclaim that storage. You can delete messages one by one by swiping from right to left and tapping.
However, there are a few tricks to reduce message memory usage. Attachments take up the most space in messages, usually photos and videos that are sent and received. Start by going to the most used messages and follow the steps below.

This, so to speak, will give you the most return on freeing up storage space on your iPhone. Another useful feature for deleting messages is in Settings, where you have the option to have iOS automatically delete messages older than 30 days or 1 year.
