“It’s a way to connect with companies that are doing great work or doing great work,” said McCarthy, who is also a 2020 Top Voice in Job and Career Search. “It could be called a professional conversation, grab a coffee, or whatever.”

“It’s an exchange that allows you to get more information about someone’s job or the workplace they’re working in. Or, in the job search area, a group or a specific job.”

The part that scares people about interviews is asking strangers for 30 minutes of their time, he said.

One way to get over your fear of being asked for an interview is to follow these tips while you’re at work, or go into an interview without expecting it to lead directly to a job.

If you’re a job seeker, you might think you need to conduct interviews with recruiters and hiring managers, but that’s a secret strategy. Recruiters and hiring managers often receive requests for meetings about their work. Therefore, it may be better to contact people who are more likely to say yes.

“You can talk to someone on the team, get that person of authority, some advice — maybe for an interview if you’re going to be looking for a job,” McCarthy said.

If you talk to someone and they think you’re a good fit for your company, they might consider submitting your resume. Then, they can send it to the hiring manager or the recruiter.

One of the most important things to remember when looking for a job or career exploration is that most of the time you will be told no or rejected, but you have to keep going. The same is true when asking for interviews. McCarthy says it takes multiple requests to get one yes.

To increase your chances of success, he suggests doing half an hour of research on the person before you approach them. Start with a relationship you have with them. After that, explain the real reason why you approached that person. Also give two or three questions that you want people to answer. Don’t generalize questions like “Tell me about your career path” or “Tell me about your company.” Be specific. Finally, allow another 15 to 30 minutes for the person to approve.

As with most aspects of career planning and job hunting, an important part of interviewing is preparation. McCarthy suggests preparing specific questions ahead of time — because most events are still open — and keep them with your camera as a guide. Those questions are most effective when the conversation flows naturally.

Another clue he gives is that he has time. If someone agrees to talk for 30 minutes, thank them for that amount and continue the conversation. Give the person an indication of how much time is left without checking the clock. For example, you can say to the person “I only have 10 minutes left and I have two more questions” Also, you should ask him if he knows anyone else you need to talk to about the job, the industry , firm or company.

McCarthy says the story needs to continue beyond that initial conversation. McCarthy says it’s important to send some kind of thank you — digital or physical. So, follow the person to say it’s okay. Tell them about your career progress and stay connected. Finally, support them by liking their posts if you can and engaging with them when possible.
