When we moved in, I had big plans for our garden. Big plans! But somehow I put it off for the past two years and our sad little garden got no love in return.

I wanted it to be a place where we could all hang out, but instead it became a place where my kids draw with chalk on the sidewalk and where spiders live. I needed some serious motivation!

What better way to do something than with a challenge, am I right? The Home Depot Patio Style Challenge was just what I needed to kick my ass.

The problem with renting is that nothing is permanent or you have to get permission from the landlord. So I wanted to make some small changes that would be simple, cost effective and ensure that we would recoup our investment when we left. This should be the perfect backyard makeover for a renter. Of course, money is always an issue, so I decided it was a cheap backyard makeover.

What was once a sad concrete slab is now a fun oasis where the whole family can have fun together. All my backyard dreams come true.

Since our garden was a nightmare, I knew the actual garden needed a facelift as well.

We had to do a lot of weeding and used 12 x 12 pavers to cover the rest of the yard. This was actually a very simple project and the paving is very cheap.

We leveled the ground, laid the pavement, and then laid the pavement. We covered it with sand and lined the perimeter of the garden with some stones.

I can’t tell you how much I didn’t love this fence. It really needed a revamp, but I couldn’t paint it because it was so permanent, I wanted a modern look. So we decided to make a painted wall.

The best thing about building our wall is that we can paint it. Since they screw into the old gate, they can also be removed when moving.

We bought 1 x 3 strips of wood. They should be as thin as 2 x 4s, not that big. They were also very inexpensive, making them perfect for this inexpensive backyard makeover.

The wall part needs about 21 pieces. We screw the pieces 1 inch apart into 2 x 3 pieces. Each wall was 8 feet tall. Then we decorated them on the fence.

Finally, I painted the stripped walls white. It brightened things up a lot, especially compared to how dark the wood was before.

Renter Friendly Townhouse Patio Makeover

My yard is small so I can’t get anything too big, but I wanted it to be a comfortable place to hang out. The Hampton Bay Lemon Grove Wicker Patio Set is perfect. I could have been there all day!

An outdoor coffee table is perfect for putting your feet up or entertaining guests, and the storage boxes underneath are great for storing extra pillows and blankets.

Accessories are always very important to me and bring everything together. You don’t have to spend a ton to look good, so I say the more material the better.

I really fell in love with the metal garden chair as a side table. It’s a really cool design and offers perfect space for your drink, a good book or a few flowers without taking up too much space.

A patio umbrella can make such a difference. When the sun is high in the sky, it’s a perfect shade.

Lighting is huge for me when it comes to outdoor spaces. There’s something magical about summer evenings with a few bistro style lamps hanging above and candles hanging below.

These string lights added the ambiance I wanted with these galvanized lanterns and LED candles.

I’m partial to succulents or tropical plants and displayed in a beautiful vessel, including a navy blue Revege ceramic pot, it really completes the look. I am not engaged in plant care, I want something simple that does not require my attention all the time. I mean, I’d rather sleep outside than prune plants.

Outdoor Decor Ideas

For our budget patio makeover, we added a fire pit. There’s nothing better than cuddling up by the fire on a cool evening in the backyard.

Since the outside patio is quite small, I’ve added some extra cushions that we can take outside when we’re ready to have our s’mores. This saves a lot of space when we don’t use the fire pit.

I am seriously in love with the beautiful garden of our new tenants. It only lasted one weekend and the bank wasn’t broken. It’s probably my favorite place right now.

Such a big difference! I look forward to many lazy summer days with friends and family.
