How To Clean Up Space On Ipad – You are here: Home 1 / Tips for beginners 2 / How to unlock storage on iPad
It’s happened to almost every competitor: you’re happy to download the new app when it’s time to download the charts for the big cross, but you get the dreaded “iPad Storage Full” message. Over time, as you download more apps and take more photos, you may quickly fill up your device’s storage and receive this warning. This means it’s time to think about freeing up storage space by deleting unused apps and media files.
How To Clean Up Space On Ipad
Before we go any further, let’s review the iPad storage options. There are more options than before, depending on the model you choose: from 64 GB to 2 TB (old models only have 8 GB). Since the internal capacity of the iPad is not expandable, it is important to plan ahead and buy a model with more space than you will need in the first place.
Icloud Storage Full? Free Up Icloud Storage With These Effective Tips
For starters, downloading personal VFR/IFR maps, airport information, and high-resolution geographic data for the United States in the ForeFlight Mobile app takes about 25 GB of data. Also note that if you update charts a few days before the expiration date, ForeFlight will store both sets of charts until the next cycle begins, requiring some space temporarily.
While most of us won’t need to download charts for the entire US, you can see that it doesn’t take long to charge an old 32GB iPad, and even a 64GB iPad can be powerful. You’ll also need space for your other apps, as well as room for new features that can be added in the future. So while the cheaper model might work, we think the 256GB model is worth the extra $100-$150. Read our full advice on the iPad to buy here.
There are several ways to free up storage on your iPad. Start by checking your current status in the main Settings app on your iPad. Next, select General from the list of options on the left, then select iPad storage in the middle of the screen.
On the iPad storage page, you can first see how much space is left, with suggestions for freeing up space, and a list of all applications sorted by size. The MB/GB size next to each app represents the actual size of the app and the downloaded content (eg charts, movies, music, etc.).
How To Free Up More Space On Icloud From Iphone Or Ipad
Now that you know what’s taking up all the space, it’s time to start prioritizing your needs and removing unnecessary apps and content:
1. Delete Unused Apps – The easiest way to free up space is to go through this list and see if there are any apps you no longer use. You will be surprised to see how much space some applications take up, especially if they have embedded video or media. The Settings app will show you when you last used an app, so find the one you don’t need and it’s taking up too much space. To delete an app from the list, select the name and the red Delete button will appear. After confirming the deletion, the application will be removed and this space will be freed immediately.
You can also delete apps directly from the iPad home screen. To do this, press and hold the app icon until a small menu appears. “Uninstall App” will appear in red first, and clicking on it will show a warning to confirm the deletion. Also note that deleting the app doesn’t mean you have to buy it again if you decide you need a refund. Just search for this app in the App Store and a cloud icon will appear, which means you can download it again for free.
2. Remove in-app media collection – There may be apps listed here that display large file sizes but are already bloated with in-app downloaded media. If you click on an application, you will see documents and data sorted by file size. It doesn’t take long for your favorite magazine or podcast app to grow to several GB of data after years of downloading. Most apps allow you to remove custom or outdated releases directly from the app to free up space.

3. Use the option to Download Apps – If you are not ready to completely delete the app, also select the option to download. This is a kind of central location where the settings and content of the app are saved, but the app itself is deleted. If you want to use the app, it can be quickly downloaded again. This is useful if you want to free up space quickly (perhaps for a major iOS update).
4. Use cloud services for videos and photos – Since you can access the Internet anywhere (if you’re down), consider moving your large collection of photos to online servers using services like Apple iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive. For example, in the iPad’s main Settings > Photos section, you can enable iCloud Photos, which automatically installs and stores your entire photo library for instant online downloads. You can also choose to upgrade iPad storage, which means that the iPad only stores a low-resolution copy of the photos on the iPad itself. Don’t worry – if you select a photo to view, the full resolution version will be downloaded. Photos can take up many GB of space, so this is a good option.
5. Optimize Music Storage – Like the Photos app, your iPad gives you the option to optimize your music storage. iOS determines which songs you haven’t played recently and deletes them from your iPad. In general, this is not needed every day, but for a major iOS update, it is a quick way to free up space (especially if you have a lot of songs stored). You can also click the Download Music button to download albums manually. If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can stream it instantly from the Music app when you’re online.
6. Adjust the map types and regions in the EFB app – Next, open the flight apps and check if there are regions or regions selected for download that you are not actually flying to – for example, removing downloaded maps of Alaska will be free up to 5GB. Or maybe you just fly an unpressurized aircraft, so you can turn off the Helicopter and IFR High Charts options.

7. Set iMessage security limits – While you can only use the Messages app on your iPhone, all messages and attachments will still be transferred to your iPad if this feature is enabled. Over the course of a year, this can easily grow to several GB. One way to control this and keep the Messages app in sync on your iPad is to limit how long messages are kept. Go to Settings > Messages and set “Message Retention” to 30 days.
8. Clear your Safari web browser cache – To improve your user experience, all web browsers store information about frequently visited websites. You may want to delete this from time to time to free up space and speed things up. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear history and website data and select this option. This will delete your browsing history, cookies and other cached (saved) data.

How To Check The Storage On Your Iphone And Ipad
Each iPhone and iPad has a specific storage capacity, from 16 GB to 512 GB for the iPhone and from 16 GB to 1 TB for the iPad. While it’s a good idea to buy a model with more storage, even the best hard drives can fill up after a while, and often when you least expect it.
From the music you buy and the apps you download to the photos you take and the messages you receive, everything should be somewhere on your device. And if your iPhone or iPad storage is full, you can’t add it. What you can do, however, is to free up your existing storage. In that way.
Apple knows that many people struggle to manage storage space on their devices, so they are introducing more devices with successive versions of iOS that help users keep up with frequently used applications and media.
