No matter what size hard drive or solid state drive you have in your computer or laptop, there comes a time when you run out of space. If you’re reaching the limit of your computer’s physical storage, here are some quick tricks to reclaim a few gigabytes of storage space. These options will only take you so far; If you need more free space after following these tips, you may need to add another hard drive or replace the existing drive with a larger capacity.
With that caveat, here are eight tips for reclaiming disk space on your Windows PC or laptop.
When you delete items such as files and photos from your computer, they are not deleted immediately. Instead, they sit in the trash and continue to take up valuable hard drive space. I’m pretty good at emptying the trash pretty much normally, but I’m also really happy that Windows monitors and deletes unnecessary temporary files and old downloads.
If your computer has multiple hard drives or a partitioned hard drive, you may run out of disk (or partition) space. Fortunately, you can fix this by changing the default storage locations for apps, documents, music, photos, and videos. To do this, open the Settings menu and select System > Storage and click the Change new content storage location link at the bottom. You can select a partition or drive attached to your computer—even a removable drive like a USB flash drive or memory card—and store files in categories including applications, documents, music, photos, and movies.
